As a mage in PvP there are classes that you will find very easy to beat, and others next to impossible to beat. Warriors, Hunters, Rouges, Warlocks are all pretty easy to beat. Paladins and Priests are tough depending on your template.
First we will discuss talents.
Arcane: Even if you plan on becoming a frost or fire mage there are some MUST HAVE skills in this tree.
1. Improved Arcane Missles 5/5: I picked this because its nice to be able to do some damage when you have a dual weilding rouge in your face. This way your spell is not interuppted and it also unlocks the next teir.
2. Arcane Concentration 5/5: This one is Great, 10% of the time the next spell you cast will cost you 0 mana, so when it procs fire off your most mana expesive spell like arcane missles.
3. Evocation1/1: Enought Said this one speaks for itself. This combined with mana sheild is a Second life for the mage against non magic classes. Catch your self low on health and mana and things are looking grim activate mana sheild and turn this on. It wil fill your mana bar and cant be inturpted while your mana sheild is up. Also in PvE this spell drastically increases your exp/hour its free rest every 10 minutes. Les time resting more killing monsters.
4. Improved Arcane Explosion5/5: This is another must have, it turn this spell into an instant cast spell that you can cast while running. In PvP I have great fun spamming this spell over and over. Say your level 50 you have 3 level 15’s and 2 level 35’s atack you. Throw on your mana sheild and spam this spell the level 15’s will all die very quickly leaving you with 2 (pretty damaged) level 35’s to deal with. While your fireballs/frostbolts could kill the level 15’s in one or two hs, this will kill them in a 1/4 of the time.
5.Improved mana Sheild Increases the total damage your mana sheild can take this is a must have.
6.Improved Counterspell If you want to have any hope at all of beating preists and paladins you need this. it will silence them for 2 seconds, so blast them till their life is low then as they heal counterspell them and deal the death blow.
Theirs more in the arcane tree you can take but they are optional depending on your build and what you want. We’ll discuss that in a bit.
Now we come to the point of choice. Fire or Frost.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Fire is good at dealing massive damage in the shortest time, while frost is good for more control while still dealing moderate damage. Fire mages will have an easier time killing palladins and priests than would a frost mage, but will also run out of mana much quicker.
The general rule is fire mages are for 1v1 combat while the frost mage is good vs. multiple enimies.
Fire Talents.
if you plan on going fire mage heres a rundown on the possible talents availble.
1. Improved Fireball5/5: This is a very nice one it knocks .5 seconds off your cast time making your 3.5 cast time 3 secs. Everybit counts when your trying to deal max damage in the fastest possible time.
2. Impact5/5: I love this one, 10% chance to stun the target is awsome.
3. Ignite5/5: Another great one, burns the target for 40% of the spells damage when crits occure. thats allot fo extra damage.
4. Flame Throwing2/2: Adds 6 yards to your fire spells, doesnt seem like much but well worth it.
5. Improved Fireblast 0/5: This talent hands down blows, dont waste a single point in it. 1.5 seconds for 5 talent points off a 15 sec cooldown is pretty much a huge waste of points, trust me dont get this.
6. Pyroblast 1/1t: well worth the 1 point investment, this spell does great damage, the fallback is a long ass 6 second cast, use it as a first blow, or after polying sumone or in combination with the instant cast talent presence of mind in the arcane talent tree. It does about twice the damage of a fireball at double the casting time but costing the same mana as a fireball. So two fireballs for the price of one!
7. Incinerate 0/2 While it looks kinda usefull it adds 4% maxed to your crit chance with scorch and fieblast, not worth 2 points or 1 point in my opinion.
8. Improved Flamestrike 0/3 A great improvement to a almost never used spell. Dont waste points here unless your trying to unlock flamewave the best aoe spell a mage has.
9. Burning Soul 3/3 This one is priceless in PvP when you have a dual weilder bashing you in the face, or a hunter with his stupid magic arrows that go through your mana sheild.
10. Improved Firewad and Improved Scorch Useless Dont waste point in these.
11. Critical mass 3/3 Tis adds 6% to the chance to crit with all fire spells. Without it you have a 4-5% chance to crit so this raises your chance to 10-11% abount as much as clarcasting, very nice in combo with ignite.
2. Firepower If your build a fire mage for pvp your goal is to dish out a crap load of damage very quick, while granted this adds 10% damage to all you firespells.Arcane power would be a better choice.
Ice Mage. Now these guys can lay waste to groups of Pc’s just not as fast as a firemage. the thing I love about frost mages is the mana, the spells cost a ton less in mana therefore less resting. Not to mention the casting time is much faster. They can take on multiple guys without blinking. great for massive PvP Battles. One thing that sucks is at 60 mages get flameball 11 there is no frostbolt 11 only 10.
Improved Frostbolt Very Nice makes your frostbolt cast in 2.5 secs.
Permafrost This ones kinda iffy for me, it makes your frostbolts slow effect last longer. however i havent senn that it dos anything to making frost nova last longer, if it did improve the time frost nova lasted I would max this out, as of now ill invest 1 maybe 2 points in it.
Winter’s Chill max this out is a must have. With a 2.5 second cast time and the extra 10% slowness it adds you can get off 4 frostbolts before they even reach you.
Ice shards This is combo with Shatter in combo with frostbite is deadly. This increases you crit damage by 100% so if your spell crits for 700 damage this will make it do 1400. Shatter gives you a 50% chance to crit a frozen target and frostbite will freeze the target for 5 seconds 15% of the time. So 15% of the time you will deal a massive amount of damage.
Improved Frost Nova Waste of points, knocks 2-4 secs off your 30 sec cooldown for frost nova…not very usefull, but must max to get shatter.
Coldsnap I find this spell nice, it allows you to reset the timer on your frost nova, sometimes saving your life.
Piercing ice Max thisout speaks for itself.
Arctic Reach Max this one out too.
Frost Channeling And yet another no brainer, max this one out.
Improved Blizzard A very nice upgrade for PvP makes people caught in the aoe stay in the aoe, a massive aoe run debuff whats better than that?
Ice Block A skill you need to have to get ice barrier, I find his a very useful spell in many differant situations. For one say im sitting in a town just minding my buisness making some runecloth and out of no where 2 guys attack me…So i hit this spell it gives me 8 seconds o formulate a plan, rather than being taken competely by suprise. Its also nice if your frost nova is halfway cooleddown cast this and it gives you enough time to let it cooldown and cast it again.
Improved cone of cold Are you serious? this spell sucks, the spell takes way too much mana to be very usefull.
Frostbite Similar to the firemages stun except this one lasts 3 seconds longer and has a 15% chance instead of 10%, not to mention in combo with shatter and ice shards makes them very dead very quick.
ice barrier very Nice spell with a low cooldown of 2 minutes. It can take more damage than mana sheild, doesnt eat away at your mana like mana sheild, and blocks magic (I think), so every2 minutes you become immune for 835 damage at rank 4.
well thats the run down on the talents. Now lets talk stategy,
Mage Vs Hunter:
To Beat a Hunter sometimes takes skill. I like to open with a polymorph, if you do this quick enough before he siks his pet on you then his pet wont attack you as you pummle it into the ground. Always kill a hunters pet first by polying the hunter. The annoying thing about hunters is their arrows are magical meaning your mana sheild is useless, so get up in their face. force them into melle, hunters have zilch melee skills, then your mana sheild becomes effective and the hunter wont last long.
Never run from a hunter ever. They can fiore arrows while running,incuding ones to slow you down, you will die if you try and run. Your only hope if you do start running away from them is if hey turn on their aspect of the chetta, if they do this simply turn around and fireblast him, this will stun him letting you escape.
Mage Vs. Warrior: Warriors are so easy to defeat its not even funny, just keep them at bay, use your manasheild and pummel them.
Mage Vs. Paladin: Now talk about annoying these guys are tough, not only can they heal themselfs but they can make themselfs immune to your spells for like 10 seconds, and since your a squishie mage with no armor they deal decent damage to you pretty quick. I like to poly these guys too then get to max range, open with a frost bolt or firebolt or pyroblast. pound them with spells tll they die, if they try and heal use counterspell. heres where your choice in talents really comes into play. You have to deal a tone of damage quickly to kill these guys, get them low then as the heal use counterspell then use presence of mind and arcane power to deal the death blow on top of fireblast.
Frost Mages good luck beating these guys, you can kite em all day and they wont die.
Mage vs. Shaman: I havent fought too many of these guys yet, so I dont know too well how to beat them. I do know this, go for the totems, you can kill em in one hit, however aoe spells wont work on totems.
Mage vs. Warlock: Use the same strategy for hunters to kill his pet, then use the paladin strat to kill him, fear sucks but next patch it wont last as long, counterspell is great here.
Mage vs. Rouge: Well if u got a few levls on the guy, u will hear him uncloak when he gets close to you. Either use ice block or frost nova to prevent them from getting in their cheep shot, after that just kit them till their dead.
Mage vs. Priest: if heirs one thing harder to kill than a pally is a priest. they can fear on top of healing uberly quick, fire mages will have an easier time killing these guys than frost mages.
